Aromatherapy is a natural and healthy way to improve your mood, relieve stress and promote relaxation. Essential oils are used to create these therapeutic effects, and a diffuser is the best way to disperse them into the air. Learn more about diffusers and why you need one in your life!
What Are Essential Oils?
Essential oils are concentrated liquids extracted from various plants. They have been used for thousands of years for spiritual and emotional uplifting, cosmetic purposes and physical healing.

Essential oils are one of the best ways to heal many ailments naturally. The best way to reap the benefits of the large variety of essential oils is to use an essential oil diffuser.
How Do Essential Oil Diffusers Work?
An essential oil diffuser is a device that disperses essential oils into the air. There are many different types and sizes of diffusers, but they all work by using a heating element to vaporize the essential oils so they can be released into the air. A good diffuser will also have a way to control the amount of essential oil that is dispersed into the air.
What is an Essential Oil Diffuser?
An essential oil diffuser is basically a small device that is used to disperse the wonderful fragrances of essential oils throughout your home. In my opinion, diffusing essential oils is the best way to receive the natural healing benefits of the oils. There are many different types of essential oil diffusers, and it is important to know how each one works. There are candle diffusers, electric heat diffusers, fan diffusers, and nebulizing diffusers, all explained below.
Candle Diffusers
A candle diffuser simply uses a tea light candle to heat up the essential oil placed in a dish above it. They can be found in many different styles and are usually made of metal, porcelain, or ceramic.

Candle Diffuser Pros
- easy to use
- inexpensive
- aesthetically pleasing
- silent
- no electricity or batteries required
Candle Diffuser Cons
- burns oil quickly
- most oils do not diffuse strong enough for healing
- heat can destroy some elements of your essential oils, making them less effective or ineffective
I personally prefer other types of essential oil diffusers and would not recommend a candle diffuser for healing with your essential oils.
Electric Heat Diffusers
An electric heat diffuser plugs into an outlet and heats the essential oil to disperse it throughout the room.
Electric Heat Diffuser Pros
easy to use, just place oil in and plug it in
- easy to clean
- diffuses oils strongly
- inexpensive
Electric Heat Diffuser Cons
some have said that certain oils do not diffuse well
- heat can destroy some elements of your essential oils, making them less effective or ineffective
Using any diffuser that uses heat to diffuse your oils is not the ideal way to use essential oils, therefore I do not recommend heat diffusers. Some will still provide nice fragrances throughout your home, but will likely not provide the healing benefits.
Fan Diffusers
You can find many different types and styles of fan diffusers. You simply place your essential oil on a pad or tray and an electric fan disperses the fragrance throughout the room.
Fan Diffuser Pros
many varieties to choose from
- does not use heat
- certain brands disperse oils throughout a large area
- can be electric or battery operated
Fan Diffuser Cons
some can be noisy
- most require purchasing replacement pads or other accessories
After a nebulizing diffuser, a fan diffuser would be my second choice for my essential oils.
Nebulizing Diffusers
There are many different types of nebulizing diffusers, and this type is by far my favorite for diffusing my essential oils. Nebulizing Diffusers take the essential oil and break it down into separate molecules before dispersing it into the air. These diffusers use a cold air pump and an atomizer to nebulize the oil into a powerful vapor. Nebulizing diffusers are by far the most therapeutic and powerful way to diffuse your essential oils. The pure oil vapor that dispenses from the diffuser will have many healing benefits.
Nebulizing Diffuser Pros
dispenses a large amount of oil
the purest diffusing method available, will not destroy any properties of the essential oils
covers a large area
many models have adjustable output settings
Nebulizing Diffuser Cons
more expensive than other types of diffusers
some require regular cleaning
If you are looking for a diffuser to provide the most therapeutic benefits from your essential oils, I would recommend a nebulizing diffuser.
Why Do You Need an Essential Oil Diffuser?
There are many reasons why you might want to use an essential oil diffuser. Maybe you’re looking for a natural remedy to relieve joint pain, relieve stress, or maybe you want to improve your mood without medication. Maybe you’re looking for a way to naturally promote relaxation or sleep. Or, maybe you just want your home to smell nice! Whatever your reasons, an essential oil diffuser can help.
Essential oils are very concentrated and potent. They are extracted from plants through a process of distillation or expression. Once the oils are extracted, they can be used in a diffuser to disperse the fragrance into the air. When you inhale the vapor from an essential oil diffuser, the molecules enter your lungs and are then absorbed into your bloodstream. From there, they travel to your brain where they can have various therapeutic effects.
Essential oils can have many different benefits for your mind and body. They can help to improve your mood, relieve stress and anxiety, promote relaxation, boost energy levels, improve sleep, and much more. There are hundreds of different essential oils available, each with its own unique benefits. And, different essential oils can be combined to create custom blends with specific desired effects.
How To Use An Essential Oils Diffuser
Essential oils diffusers are a great way to enjoy the benefits of aromatherapy. There are many different types of diffusers available on the market, but they all work in basically the same way. To use an essential oils diffuser, you will need a few drops of your favorite essential oil or blend, distilled water, and a power source.

Once you have all of your supplies, simply add the essential oil or blend to the diffuser reservoir, add water to the fill line, and turn on the power. Depending on the type of diffuser you are using, you may need to wait a few minutes for it to heat up before it begins dispersing the oils into the air.
As the diffuser runs, you should begin to notice the relaxing effects of the essential oils. When you are finished using the diffuser, be sure to turn it off and empty any remaining water before storing it away. With proper care and cleaning, your essential oils diffuser will provide years of enjoyment.
Final Words
If you’re looking for a natural way to improve your health and well-being, an essential oil diffuser is a great option. And, while diffusers are most commonly used in the home, there are also travel-sized versions that can be used on the go.
