If you suffer from Sinus Headaches, you know how painful and irritating they can be. I used to suffer from headaches (most caused by sinus pressure) on a daily basis. I would take all types of over-the-counter pain medications and decongestants and never seemed to feel any better. I even went to the doctor for antibiotics on some occasions. Then, I found information on natural remedies and never looked back.
What causes sinus headaches?
Let’s first take a look at what causes those pesky sinus headaches. The cause of sinus pain is swelling of the lining of the nose and sinuses, which can be caused by allergies, sinusitis, colds and many other factors. If you feel pain around the eyes and forehead, which gets worse every time you bend over, you likely have a sinus headache. These types of headaches can even cause tooth pain. Migraine headaches can also cause many of the same symptoms as a sinus headache. Some of these remedies will also help with migraines, along with lying in a quiet, dark room.
Natural Remedies For Sinus Headaches
Natural Remedies, such as these, have been proven to help with sinus headaches, much more effectively than over-the-counter medication. Many people feel that antibiotics will help with every ailment and take them frequently, and they end up becoming resistant to antibiotics. Before going to your doctor for antibiotics, try these natural remedies. Antibiotics are most times ineffective in treating sinus problems, because less than 2% of sinus headaches are caused by bacteria. Also, you should stay away from over-the-counter decongestant sprays, as these will provide only temporary relief and lead to worse pain in the future.
1) Hot water vapor
Steam can help moisten the sinuses and loosen up mucus in the nose. Standing in the bathroom with a hot shower running will provide some immediate relief.
You can even sprinkle a few drops of menthol or eucalyptus oil in the shower. Another method to try is boiling water on the stove and standing over the rising steam.
2) Spice up your diet
Capsaicin is the active ingredient in chile peppers, and is used to treat many types of pain. If you can stomach spicy foods, capsaicin is an excellent natural remedy, and many other spicy foods have been known to help with sinus pain by opening the nasal passages. Try adding some spicy foods, like hot mustard, hot peppers, wasabi, horseradish and curry, to your diet to relieve your sinus pain.
3) Try Bromelain
Bromelain is a protein found in pineapple stems that is used by many to reduce swelling. Professional fighters have been using Bromelain for years. Research shows that it can also reduce swelling in the nasal passages, providing relief for sinus headaches. Bromelain is sold over-the-counter as a supplement. You should consult your doctor first if you are taking other medications, as Bromelain could interact with them.
4) Try hot and cold compresses
Warming the nasal passages with a hot compress can loosen secretions and moisten the nasal passages. Try soaking a washcloth in hot water, then placing over the eyes and nose for 3 minutes. Then, exchange the warm compress for a cold washcloth for 30 seconds. Alternate at least 3 more times. This can be done several times a day if needed.
5) Essential Oils
Earlier I mentioned using eucalyptus or menthol oil in the shower. Along with that method, essential oils can be used in an essential oil diffuser in your home to provide relief. Essential Oils are concentrated liquids derived from various plants that have been used for thousands of years as natural healers. Some excellent essential oils to use for congestion are peppermint oil, eucalyptus oil, and thyme oil.
There are also many essential oils that are used to treat all types of headaches. The most effective one I’ve tried is Lavender oil. You can also use chamomile oil, cinnamon oil, clove oil, ginger oil, jasmine oil, and patchouli oil. 6) Meditation and Healing Crystals

Know when to see the doctor
If your sinus headache is accompanied with a fever, it is a good idea to seek a physician. Also, if you have persistent severe pain that is not helped with any of these methods and lasts more than 24 hours, you may need to see a doctor to be sure it is not something more serious.
